Spain have been crowned champions of Europe just once in their history, back in 1964 when they won on home soil, and over the years have developed a reputation as a nation that flatters to deceive on the biggest stages.

Despite that, Spain will go into Euro 2008 as one of the favourites to clinch the title following a 14-match unbeaten run during which they have defeated the likes of Italy and France.

Capdevila insists confidence is high but is wary of putting too much pressure on the squad ahead of their trip to Austria and Switzerland.

"We are full of hope. We know that we could do something great and we are going to see what happens," Capdevila said.

"It is clear that there are a lot of expectations, but we have still not achieved anything yet. We start from zero and I hope it will be an unforgettable tournament. Let's see if we can make history like the heroes of '64.

"It is not easy, but we have good feelings, the squad is united and we have to take it step by step and not think that we are favourites or anything else."

Much of the attention on Luis Aragones' side this summer will be on their attacking play, with the likes of Fernando Torres, David Villa, David Silva and Andres Iniesta sure to catch the eye.

However, Villarreal full-back Capdevila believes he and his fellow defenders have a vital role to play as well, saying: "It is crucial that we always try to keep a clean sheet. Then, with one goal you will win. The less goals you concede the more chance you have of winning.

"If they talk about the defence, we are doing badly. It is better that they talk about the forwards and the goals, much better, and if they talk less about the defence we will be happy, because for us it will be because we are doing things well."
