Capello, who included Adam Johnson and Theo Walcott in his starting line-up and gave a first cap to substitute Jack Wilshere, had seen his side fall behind to an own goal by Phil Jagielka.

But, faced with another defeat on the back of a disastrous World Cup, the home side responded as a double from captain Steven Gerrard sealed the win.

Capello, who did not celebrate either of England's goals, told ITV1: "I concentrated on the game, I wanted to see everything.

"I am happy with the performance, we played well in the first 30 minutes, but the last 10 minutes of the first half were not so good. They were really compact and it was difficult to find space.

"In the second half we saw some different young players, and their performance was very good. It was important for them to play here at Wembley and not away from home.

"I think we have found some new players for the future."

England had been expected to receive a poor reception from the Wembley crowd tonight, but that did not prove to be the case and Capello thanked the supporters.

"The fans were really good, thank you. I know the fans respect the team, I hope we can win something for these fans as they are fantastic."
