THE Football Association brought a swifter than expected conclusion to the debate over whether Fabio Capello should remain as England manager this afternoon.
In confirming Capello will stay in his job until after Euro 2012, the FA were acting within five full days of the gut-wrenching disappointment of the 4-1 hammering by old rivals Germany in Bloemfontein.
Here, Press Association Sport looks at how events unfolded.
Sunday, June 27 - A day that began with such high hopes ends in total despair as England are ripped apart by Germany. Capello bemoans Frank Lampard's disallowed goal but a 4-1 scoreline suggests faults lie far deeper. Capello demands a vote of confidence from Club England chairman Sir David Richards.
Monday, June 28 - Capello confirms discussions have taken place with Richards and a decision on the Italian's future will be taken in two weeks. Capello indicates his desire to remain for the final two years of his contract. Harry Redknapp claims the job should be filled by an Englishman.
Tuesday, June 29 - Former England skipper Alan Shearer calls for Capello to be sacked, claiming he is the main reason why England have performed so badly in South Africa. Later that same day, prominent FA official - and key Richards ally - Bolton chairman Phil Gartside suggests Capello should remain in his job.
Wednesday, June 30 - More support for Capello, this time behind the scenes from Sir Trevor Brooking. It also becomes apparent first choice replacement Roy Hodgson has committed his future to Liverpool.
Thursday, July 1 - Another influential FA figure, David Sheepshanks, urges caution in dealing with the managerial position, indicating more backing for Capello.
Friday, July 2 - Football Association confirm Capello will remain in his job.
