Rooney was famously dismissed when England were knocked out in their last major tournament two years ago and there were glimpses of his frustration boiling over yesterday in the friendly against USA.

The Manchester United forward, 22, kicked the ball against the advertising hoardings when a decision went against England, then was fortunate not to be booked for a lunge on Ricardo Clark.

He did pick up a yellow card for fouling Frankie Hejduk later on, just before he was substituted by Capello.

"I have to speak with Rooney and explain not to do these tackles. Not now but the next time I'm with the team," Capello said.

It was not on the same scale as Rooney's tantrum against Spain in 2004, when he reacted badly to being taken off for his own good, but it was another reminder of the hot-blooded streak he has.

Capello does not want to curb Rooney's aggression but is known to regard discipline on and off the pitch as one of his priorities.

"The players are learning the manager is very strict and very serious and when you train you have to train hard and when you play you have to play hard," explained former captain David Beckham, who played under Capello at Real Madrid.

"When you are with the England team you have to concentrate and wear the shirt with pride. He has told us that."

Training hard is something that comes naturally to Rooney.

"It's the same in training. On the day before the game it was the same, it is normal for him," Capello said.

The England boss joked: "There was worry for the other players!"

Capello also suggested he has only worked with defenders rather than forwards who have shown Rooney's aggressive streak, but he sees it is as a positive attribute that has to be channelled in the right way.

"Yes, I like this. I like players who have quality but also who do not fear to tackle," the England boss added.

"When a manager or coach sees a player can move on, we have to speak with him. He is young, he is a good player and I think the future will be better. For this reason I think I have to speak with him.

"When you play you need to tackle very hard. He did two very, very hard tackles (against USA), possibly yellow cards but not for red cards. It was a normal game for him.

"He did a very strong tackle and that was normal in my opinion."

Capello is also considering Rooney's best position after using him as a lone striker in his first two games in charge before playing him off Jermain Defoe against USA.

Rooney saw plenty of the ball but struggled for chances, fuelling his frustration.

There will be a new attacking line-up against Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday as Rooney is among seven players involved in the Champions League final who will be rested.

Capello added: "After three games I tried and I chose different options and I have another possibility for the next game.

"When we play the last friendly game I think my knowledge will be better. It depends on the moment always."

Only Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Bridge remain from the United and Chelsea players, while Gareth Barry has been widely tipped to be captain for the friendly in Port of Spain.

John Terry put his case forward for the role of permanent captain when he scored against USA, while Beckham reminded Capello of how dangerous his set-pieces are.

David Bentley, seen as Beckham's natural successor, is yet to win over the Wembley fans, who jeered him when he came on, despite the promise he has shown at Blackburn as a potential performer on the world stage.

Capello added: "When I never picked Beckham in the first game people asked me 'why?' Now it is 'why Beckham?'

"In the squad we have good players. I hope in the future there will be more good players and I will have to choose.

"I prefer to have two or three players in every position on the pitch. It is possible next time Bentley will be in the first XI and another time Beckham - I will choose depending on the game and the moment."
