Peter Whittingham put the Coca-Cola Championship side ahead in the ninth minute when he danced his way into the area before curling a superb shot past Mark Schwarzer and in off the upright.

The Bluebirds doubled their advantage in the 23rd minute when defender Roger Johnson dived to meet Whittingham's free-kick and guided a header past Schwarzer.

"We played some good football and defended when we had to - the win was thoroughly deserved and we performed fantastically," Jones told BBC1.

"I don't think Middlesbrough can have any complaints. We knew if we played to our potential we would have a chance and we got what we deserved.

"It is a great achievement for the club in light of what's happened off the football pitch and I'm sure the chairman will be happy."

Jones believes his players now have the chance to match the achievements of the last Cardiff side to reach the semi-finals in 1927, when they went on to lift the Cup.

"I get 1927 rammed down my throat and now we've got the chance to make our own piece of history," Jones added.

"They are a great bunch of lads and all we can do is continue do the business on the pitch. Today it was all about key players in certain positions performing to the what they are capable off.

"We were composed, did the right things and it is up there with the best performances since I've been here."
