Sydney FC's Michelle Carney, sister of Socceroo and former Sydney FC favourite David, says last week's 2-1 win in Canberra against last season's runner up has boosted belief in the sky blue camp after their opening day 3-1 home loss to high flying Central Coast.
"I think our match fitness is getting better and we need to start picking up points now as it's a short season," the skilful attacking midfielder told au.fourfourtwo.com.
"But that win in Canberra was great and we feel we can do well up there in Newcastle. We've got forwards like Sarah Walsh and Kyah Simon who are looking good."
Simon (pictured right),18, looked good in training today and together with goal hero from last week Sarah Walsh, the sky blues have some real potency up front.
Sydney, currently in fourth spot on four points, will look to beat sixth-placed Jets on the weekend to push into the top two. The Jets, coached by former Mariners Wayne O'Sullivan and Andre Gumprecht, lost in Perth last week 1-0 after a solid 0-0 draw in Adelaide on the opening day of the W-League.
As for Michelle, she comes from a real football family. As well as Socceroo David, there's another brother who plays NSW Super League while their father also played in England.
"Football's in the blood! I had no choice," said Michelle.
Michelle recalls growing up playing in the backyard with Sydney FC and Matildas teammate Heather Garriock against her FC Twente and Socceroo star brother.
"It used to be me and Heather against David and Heather's brother," she said. "After school we'd play them and they'd sook and cry when we beat them."
For Newcastle, their first game at home after two tough trips away will offer some respite. And the squad has been further boosted with O'Sullivan promoting four players: Emma Stewart, Libby Sharpe, Bronte Barnes and Hanna Brewer.
Tara Andrews misses out due to international duty.
At training today the Sydney girls looked sharp as coach Alen Stajcic fine-tuned their preparations ahead of the derby against a young Jets outfit. The sky blues have promoted Linda O'Neill but will be without Teigan Allen, BrittanyWhitfield and Nicola Bolger all on international duty.
Matilda Danielle Small has left the club.
