Carney, 33, featured in the 2006 A-League Grand Final where the Sky Blues came away with a 1-0 win over Central Coast Mariners.

Now the former Socceroo feels his undefeated team have a golden opportunity to win the league this season as they currently top the table with seven points clear from second.

“Touch wood, I’ve been good with injuries and if that continues I feel like I’ve got a lot more in the tank and a lot to give to Sydney FC for sure,” Carney told FourFourTwo.

“Brosquey (Sydney captain Alex Brosque) and I talk about it a lot, we want to win it before we hang up our boots. At a club like Sydney, we haven’t won something for a while now.

“It would be great to win it and then see what happens from there. We’ve got a great opportunity this season to win that trophy and that’s all we’re thinking about now - winning the league and the final.

“If I keep on performing, whenever I play I go off my own performance really and I don’t want to continue if I’m not performing to be honest. At the moment I feel good, my legs are good.”

The Sky Blues look to down the struggling Central Coast Mariners away on Sunday where Carney will meet former Sheffield United teammate Nick Montgomery once again.

Carney also said he expected the three points against the Mariners and was hoping to play against the Mariners skipper.

“With the way we’re playing we should get the win,” he said.

“Monty wears his heart on his sleeve at the Central Coast and every time he’s in the team it’s a hard team to beat.

“He’ll be fully up for it against us, but with the quality of our side we should get the three points.”

Montgomery was full of praise for Carney and his team during the week and emphasised the depth of Sydney’s squad.

Carney’s last game for Sydney was in the beginning of December where they defeated Newcastle Jets 2-0 away.

The 33-year-old’s simple explanation was it was hard for coach Graham Arnold to “change a winning team”.

He also indicated the influence of Michael Zullo and Alex Wilkinson in the backline was key to their super season.

“Our backline has been exceptional this season and they’ve all been fit and there hasn’t been many injuries,” he said.

“All of them have been excellent, our midfield and our strikers so you can’t really knock anyone on the park at the moment. Everyone’s played their part to get where we are.”
