Sydney FC winger David Carney admits his controversial equaliser against Melbourne Victory was a handball.
Carney’s second half double helped Sydney to a 2-1 comeback win keeping its perfect record in the league, however, replays showed the first goal was a blatant handball.
The incident ignited debate for video technolgy to be used.
Victory coach Kevin Muscat could not believe the infringement was missed by both the linesman and referee Chris Beath.
During the post-match interview Carney was unsure if the ball touched his hand but a few days after the game admitted that he did commit the violation.
“Yeah, it was a handball,” said the 32-year old to FourFourTwo. “I know it was a handball but the only thing I can say is that it was sort of last second. I thought the defender was going to head the ball and as he missed it I tried to bring it down as quick as possible which I did and lucky enough it went into the inside of the net.”
Normally Carney’s technique to score the goal would have been the focus but the 32-year-old understands why the attention is on the fact that the goal should not have counted.
“I did take it well and it was a nice finish but at the end of the day I did handball it, he said. "Sometimes in football things like that happen it goes in circles in regards to things like that. We had a lot of bad luck last year regarding calls and decisions so I’ve just got to take that one and I was happy it went in and I was happy to get the second.
"I do think it was a handball I understand why Melbourne Victory squad are kicking off because we would be the same.”
And while Carney’s brace helped Sydney to their best start to an A-League season, the 48 capped Socceroo said the Sky Blues aren’t counting their chickens just yet.
“It’s still early days and we aren’t getting carried by no means,” he said. “We’ve done nothing yet we’ve got a lot of senior players in the team which is good they are all experienced and know that it’s only five games in.
“We’ve just been enjoying our football now and we know there is a lot of hard work to be done.”
Sydney FC’s win in the Big Blue ended Victory's nine game unbeaten streak and Carney said that coming back from a goal down showed the Sky Blues ability to fight back.
“It shows you the character we’ve got in the team,” he said. “I came on in a good time in the second half when we were dominating possession and really going for it. We went four wins straight and we never went behind before so the character of the boys to never give up and really want to win the game, shows the team spirit in the squad and that is great.”
