Carney had little chance to shine at the club, making just 11 EPL appearances for a total of just 496 minutes on the field since signing from Dutch Eredivisie side Twente last year.

He was challenging the already established Stephen Crainey for the left back position and despite a handful of starts, never made sufficient impression to claim it for himself.

His niggling shoulder injury ruled him out of the latter stages of the competition, including the final day rollercoaster against Manchester United that ultimately sealed Blackpool's EPL demise.

Carney was signed on a one year contract with an option for a second year which the club have opted not to activate.

Blackpool have retained Carney's rival Crainey, superstar skipper Charlie Adam and veteran Brett Omerod. Ian Evatt, the scorer of the crucial own goal against Manchester United, has also been kept on.

Among those released were Marlon Harewood and Jason Euell.

The club added: "Blackpool Football Club would like to thank all of those players departing for their efforts and wishes them all the very best for the future."
