Carney has barely played this season and the former Sydney FC man hopes his performances in the international arena can boost his cause on the domestic front.

"I hope it has. I'm confident in my own ability," he said after the Socceroo win over Qatar at Suncorp.

"I'm not playing at Sheffield United but I still know what I can do. I need to play for my club – Pim said that. That's my aim.

"I've spoken with the boss Kevin Blackwell and he said to me technically I'm one of the best at Sheff United. He knows, he just wants me to lift my tempo up to play for him because it's a very different game to international football.

"For Blackwell I've just got to show him that I can lift the intensity the way he wants to because technically he knows I've got it."

However, the attacking full back says he may have to look elsewhere if he's not getting regular game time.

He added: "I'll see what happens with Sheffield.

"If it comes to January and I have to leave to play football. I don't know but either way I know I have to play football sooner or later."
