A win over Roar this weekend will see the club equal Melbourne’s A-League record of seven wins in a row.

Sydney’s previous best start to a season was just two wins.

The Sky Blues set a new A-League record for the opening six rounds with 17 goals to eclipse Brisbane Roar’s former record of 16.

Carney, who again made an impact when he came on in the second half, said Sydney have another gear.

“We are only going to get better,” he said “We’ve got great players. We’ve had some really good patches and spells and the way we’ve been training and some of the quality of football that we have played has been fantastic.

“Once we play with each other more and know each other more with the new players like Bobo we know that we are going to get better, so we are really looking forward to it.

“When we start to click, we can hopefully really punish teams and kick on from there.”

Carney made an immediate impact when he came on in the 67th-minute against Glory last week and gave Sydney get a vital third after chipping off the post for Ninkovic to score.

And while he’d prefer a starting role, Carney said he’s content being the super sub.

“Obviously, I want to play,” he said. “I want to play every game; I love to play it’s just unfortunate I got ill just before the Newcastle Jets game. I never trained so Arnie went with Alex Brosque.

“Alex Brosque came on and played brilliant and he scored and everyone played really well against the Jets, so I can understand with the squad that we’ve got players that come in and do the job and are winning games, it’s hard to change.

“We’ve got that much depth in quality players that anyone can come in and do a job and we are only going to get better especially with Bernie Ibini coming back as well. We’ve just got that firepower at the moment.”

Now in his second stint at the club, the 32-year-old is viewed as an elder statesman by his young team mates who affectionately call him Uncle Dave.

“When I walked in the young lads made it up and they feel I’m the fun Uncle,” he said. “It seems like it stuck around the changerooms. It makes me feel old put it that way.

“But I feel good, my legs feel good, I’m 33 next week. So, the body still feels great, touch wood. I’ve had a great pre-season at Sydney FC. We’ve got a great fitness coach staff at Sydney so all the players are fit and firing so that has helped me a lot.”
