The former Sydney FC wingman landed the £400,000 move to join fellow Socceroo Nikita Rukavytsya at Luke Wilkshire's old club after impressing for Australia despite his lack of domestic club game time.

Carney was frozen out of the Blades after falling out with boss Kevin Blackwell. Things got so bad, Blackwell chose to have one less sub at last week's match rather than give Carney a place on the bench.

But despite that, Carney has continued to cover himself in glory every time he's had the chance to wear the green and gold for Australia, culminating in a scorcher goal against Ireland last month.

"I want to say thank you to everyone at United because it's a great club full of great people," Carney told the Sheffield Star. "I mean that sincerely.

"I'll always look out for their results and hopefully keep in touch with a lot of people. It's a shame how things worked out, especially over the last 12 months or so, but sometimes things happen for a reason."

Now he's looking forward to fighting for a starting spot in Twente's first XI under new coach and former England manager Steve McClaren.

Twente had earlier plucked Wilkshire from lower league obscurity after a recommendation from then Roos coach Guus Hiddink - and recently sold the former Bristol City and Middlesbrough player to Dinamo Moscow at a huge profit..

Now Carney's planning to shine just as brightly for the Dutch side.

"Steve has apparently been watching me for a while now," Carney added. "I think he's seen some videos of international matches and what he's said is very positive.

"I'm not sure where I'll be playing because he's told me he sees me as a midfielder, an inside forward and has noted I can play at full-back.

"Hopefully, there will be plenty of opportunities."

McClaren stepped in to rescue Carney from his Sheffield hell after praise from both Wilkshire and Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek.

"We needed a replacement for Edson who's gone to Bayern Munich," said McClaren. "We have seen him play and we also sought advise from Luke Wilkshire and Pim Verbeek who both spoke positively about David.

"We are therefore delighted to have him on board."
