He wanted to replace Luke Varney with Carney and use the Australian just in front of left-back Stephen Crainey.

However Crainey's number was displayed instead of Varney's and Holloway told the Blackpool Gazette : "We got it mixed up.

"I wanted to take Varney off and put Carney on but we ended up taking off Crainey and it all got a little confused.

"We took off a left-back when I wanted to leave him on and put another left-back in front of him to make us more solid for the last couple of minutes.

"If it looked a positive substitution, then please accept that. If it looked an absolute nightmare and a 'what is he doing?' moment, then that's because I didn't want it to happen.

"So we've got a new thing now where the staff are going to run everything past me because Varney, Carney, Crainey is a bit of a tongue-twister.

"We made a big mistake but I'll let my staff off because I think they are absolutely great."
