THE PROSPECT of playing against former teammate Wayne Rooney at South African 2010 is firing up Socceroo David Carney ahead of Australia's' World Cup qualifier against Uzbekistan next Wednesday.
To see today's training session...
Carney, 25, and the Manchester United and England star were teammates in the Everton youth team in 2004 before Rooney made spectacular inroads into English football.
Carney has since returned to Australia, re-established his football career at club and Socceroo level and now is enjoying a loan spell at Norwich City in the English Championship.
Their paths may cross again in England but with both nations on track to make the 2010 World Cup and Carney would love nothing more than to mark Rooney on the biggest stage.
"He's brilliant towatch but I haven't spoken to him much since the olden days. He's on a different level at the moment, isn't he.
"I'd love to play against England and him in the World Cup if we go through, that'd be great.
"I think if we win next Wednesday we're basically through. It won't be easy but we should get it."
Quizzed on whether he'd received any advice from his former Toffees teammate Carney joked, "I think he's going to teach me how to throw a ball at a referee."
Carney is currently on loan at Norwich City from Sheffield United in the English Championship and has six games to go before returning to Bramall Lane.
"I'm confident I can do the business for Norwich and keep them up [from relegation]," says Carney.
And he remained philosophical about his lack of game time at the Blades. "One coach, Bryan Robson, liked me and another didn't.
"You can't really plan anything and when you do it never seems to work out so I think the best thing to do is jut to perform.
"When you do perform, people start talking about you anyway."
