A protest march against the ongoing ownership of Liverpool owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett will be staged by thousands of fans prior to tomorrow's home match against Blackpool.

The Americans' three-and-a-half-year reign at Anfield looks to be drawing to a close with a mid-October deadline looming for repayment or refinancing of the loan they used to purchase the club.

There is the real possibility Royal Bank of Scotland could assume control of the club in the short term while a buyer is found.

Several parties have expressed an interest in recent months but with the prospect of being able to buy the club for not much more than the £280million debt - taking into account the original £237million borrowed plus additional penalty fees Hicks and Gillett are liable for after not selling the club within the timescale prescribed by RBS - no one has made an official bid.

The chances are they will all wait until a decision comes from the bank on what direction they take with regards to the money they are owed.

It is highly unlikely Liverpool would be deducted nine points for going into administration as the debt is with the owners' holding company, Kop Holdings, and not the club, which itself is still profitable.

Carragher said the players tried to distance themselves from the board issues, but for someone who has become part of the fabric of the club he joined while still at primary school, he knows the significance of the next few weeks.

"I don't try to get involved in that type of stuff but the ownership is not something that can be sorted out quickly," said the 32-year-old.

"It is a massive decision for the club but it is not about the players now, we are talking about 20 to 30 years down the line.

"It is important the club get it right."

More pressing for Carragher and his Liverpool team-mates, however, is tomorrow's visit of Blackpool.

The Seasiders have surprised many this season and the defender knows they cannot afford to be complacent against the Barclays Premier League newcomers.

"Blackpool have been the story of the season. They will be desperate to make a statement at Anfield and it's up to us to match their enthusiasm," he said.

"We've got to make sure we get the three points and start moving up the league. We've got to match them for spirit."
