Carroll has been a revelation as Newcastle have made a steady start to life back in the Barclays Premier League and is being tipped to win a place in Fabio Capello's England squad for the forthcoming friendly with France.

But off-field controversy continues to dog the 21-year-old.

Last month, he pleaded guilty to common assault and was fined £1,000, plus £2,500 compensation, after an altercation with a man in a nightclub, having also been ordered to stay with Magpies captain Kevin Nolan by magistrates in Hexham under bail conditions set after he was charged with assaulting an ex-girlfriend.

There were more lurid newspaper reports of off-field excesses facing Carroll on Sunday.

And Roeder, who gave Carroll his Newcastle debut in 2007, believes the Tynesider would benefit from a "quieter life".

He told Radio Five Live: "I am sure (Newcastle manager) Chris (Hughton) will tell you how hard he works every day in training to make himself a better player but by living the way he is he will not fulfil his potential that he could possibly fulfil by having a bit of a quieter life.

"Andy needs to realise that if he wants to get to where I am sure he does want to get to, because he is ambitious.

"He is a great lad around the training ground, a really good lad, coaches love working with him."
