Casey Comets are Victoria’s champion women’s team – for now at least – after defeating arch rivals Box Hill in a penalty shoot-out in the Women's Premier League Cup Final on Thursday.
Box Hill went ahead courtesy of a Kat Smith first half goal, but the Comets replied in the second half through substitute Alex Gummer.
Locked at 1-1 after regular time, the game went down to penalties, with each side feeling the nerves early on, failing to find the net on both of their first two attempts.
Amanda Lawless’ missed penalty over the bar handed Casey – formerly Cranbourne – their first silverware with their new name and a much needed boost for the side with the Womens Premier League season kicking off on Saturday, March 24.
