Matildas and Melbourne City defender Steph Catley says she never doubted Sam Kerr’s ability to be one of the best footballers in the world.
Kerr has won the hearts of many Australians this year due to her achievements with the Matildas, Perth Glory and National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side Sky Blue FC.
2017 has been a big year for Kerr, to add to her stellar Matildas performances - she fell short of a W-League championship, claimed the Julie Dolan Medal, became NWSL all-time leading goal scorer and was recently named Women’s Health Sportswoman of the Year.
She also won the NWSL’s Most Valuable Player Award, the golden boot and was named in the league’s best XI.
Catley, who is one of the famous faces in the Matildas side, said it must not be forgotten she battled a foot injury early last year.
“The word ‘amazes’… I’m not sure it amazes me because I always knew Sam was capable of doing this kind of thing,” Catley told FourFourTwo.
“She’s been so injury-ridden that I don’t think she’s been able to get herself into her stride. It’s almost like she could’ve done this a couple of years ago had she not had the injuries.
“Sam’s always had it in her locker to do all these things, but at the same time, her injuries have helped her in terms of her mentality and mental strength. Understanding her body and how to work harder and push herself to the limit.
“Everything that has been built up to this year has been coming for her and I almost expected it at some stage. To see her reaping the rewards is awesome.”

Kerr returns to the W-League at nib Stadium on Friday in what will be a rematch of last season’s grand final between Glory and City.
Catley also said she was inspired with the humility Kerr has and believes she deals with the spotlight extremely well.
“Out of everyone in our team that this has happened to, I’m glad it’s Sam,” the City captain said.
“I think she’s the one who can handle it the best and not change who she is or be overwhelmed by it. Sam’s already handling it well, she doesn’t really like the limelight, but then again she doesn’t shy away from it.
“She just doesn’t want to talk about herself which is a rare quality in something she’s good. Sam’s a great person and an incredible player.”
