VPL WRAP: Reigning champions Green Gully returned to winning ways with an upset win over Dandenong Thunder as Richmond had a brilliant week and South Melbourne went top.
Richmond 1 (Timmy Purcell)
Victorian Training Centre 0
@ Knights Stadium
RICHMOND moved out of the relegation zone with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Victorian Training Centre.
In only their second win of the season, a strike early in the second half from Timmy Purcell was enough to collect a valuable three points.
It was an important mid-week win while VTC have now lost two on the trot.
Northcote City 4 (Eddie Soares, Hayden D’Agostino, Nicholas Curtis, Rodrigo Covarrubias)
Heidelberg United 1 (Adrian Caceres)
@ John Cain Memorial Park
NORTHCOTE City scored a stunning 4-1 win over Heidelberg United, who finished the game with nine men.
In a fiery encounter, the Bergers fell behind early and played the majority of the game with 10 men, but copped a second dismissal in the second half.
They made the perfect start when Adrian Caceres opened the scoring with a penalty, but things went horribly wrong in the 10th minute.
John Lazaridis saw red for denying a goal-scoring opportunity and Eddie Soares curled the resultant free kick into the top corner.
Hayden D’Agostino ensured the hosts went into the break in front after tapping in the second.
City scored their third on the hour mark as Nicholas Curtis slotted home to give them a two-goal buffer.
If Heidelberg weren’t already in a tough spot, things got even harder when Yared Hailemelekot saw red for a second bookable offence.
The rout was completed in the dying minutes as Rodrigo Covarrubias came on to make it 4-1.
It was a big win for City while the Bergers remain close to the bottom two since being docked three points.
Dandenong Thunder 0
Green Gully Cavaliers 3 (Jason Hayne (2), Graham Hockless)
@ George Andrews Reserve
REIGNING champions Green Gully produced an upset to hand Dandenong their first loss of the season with a comprehensive 3-0 victory.
Away from home and with only one win under their belts this season, the Cavaliers shocked Thunder thanks to a brace from Jason Hayne.
They made a perfect start thanks to Graham Hockless, who opened the scoring inside two minutes to give Gully an early lead, something they have rarely had in their title defence.
On the hour mark, Hayne struck to make it 2-0 before he made it three with another 13 minutes from time.
It was a huge result for the Cavaliers after languishing in the relegation zone following Richmond’s mid-week win, while Thunder have received a wake up call with their first loss.
St Albans Saints 0
South Melbourne 2 (Fernando De Moraes, Kyle Joryeff)
@ Churchill Reserve
SOUTH Melbourne moved to the top of the table after a 2-0 win over St Albans Saints.
A volley from Fernando De Moraes and a Kyle Joryeff goal piled more misery on the coach-less and winless Saints.
South moved one point clear at the top while the Saints are five points from safety this early in the season.
Richmond 3 (Michael Ferrante (2), Jason Hoffman)
Bentleigh Greens 1 (Stuart Nicholson)
@ Kevin Bartlett Reserve
RICHMOND made it the perfect week with a second win, a 3-1 victory over Bentleigh Greens.
After disposing of VTC in mid-week, the Eagles scored another valuable three points thanks to a brace from Michael Ferrante.
It was Jason Hoffman who opened the scoring early on before Ferrante struck with another before the interval.
Stuart Nicholson pulled one back for the Greens but Ferrante was on hand to regain the two-goal buffer.
Richmond’s exceptional week saw them go from the relegation zone to within touching distance of a finals spot, roughly where the Greens still sit.
Hume City 0
Springvale White Eagles 0
@ Broadmeadows Valley Park
HUME City could not move into top spot after being forced to settle for a scoreless draw against Springvale White Eagles.
City had the opportunity to possibly be top at the end of the round while the White Eagles would be pleased to come away with a point against such a good opponent.
Melbourne Knights 1 (Josip Kozic)
Oakleigh Cannons 2 (Dane Milovanovic)
@ Knights Stadium
OAKLEIGH Cannons returned to winning ways after two-straight losses, recording a 2-1 victory over Melbourne Knights.
Two first half goals, one from Dane Milovanovic, helped the Cannons into the lead and they held on despite a second-half penalty from Josip Kozic.
Knights have lost three of their last four while Oakleigh moved back into third spot.
