Sainsbury began his senior career with Central Coast Mariners, before his first foray to Europe with Dutch Eredivie outfit PEC Zwolle.

Since arriving in Jiangsu in 2016 he has spent two loan spells in Europe, first with Serie A giants Inter Milan and second with Grasshoppers Zurich in Switzerland.
