The 20-year-old – who plays for Vitesse Arnhem – scored eight goals from 33 Eredivisie appearances last season.

That form saw him win his first senior cap for the Netherlands, while he has been a regular for his country in the Under-21 side and is currently in action at the European Championships at that age level.

Chelsea – who loaned defender Patrick van Aanholt to Vitesse last season – have offered in the region of seven million pounds for Van Ginkel, according to the club.

And his agent, Karel Jansen, confirmed the Stamford Bridge outfit were one of many clubs chasing his services.

He told De Telegraaf: "Chelsea are interested, we don't deny it. But there are more clubs.

"Ajax had made official contact with Vitesse but they don't want to talk with them.

"The situation is that we wait until after the European Under-21s Championship and then will look for the best step."

Jansen also added that there was a slight possibility that Van Ginkel could stay at Vitesse, although it now seems unlikely.

"Marco still has two years under contract at the GelreDome, so we don't know if he will leave Arnhem."
