AUSSIES ABROAD: Former Socceroo Scott Chipperfield scored overnight as FC Basel pushed Spartak Moscow all the way in the Europa League only to bow out after a 1-1 draw.
Basel, who lost the first-leg in Switzerland 3-2, had to win the return clash in Moscow by two goals to progress.
And Chipperfield, making his first start for Basel since October, gave them the perfect start when he opened the scoring on 15 minutes for his fifth goal of the season.
Valentin Stocker won the ball for Basel from a Spartak free-kick before his left-wing cross proved too hot for Spartak keeper Andrei Dikan to handle, allowing Chipperfield to volley home the loose ball from close range.
Basel tried to add a crucial second goal, with Chipperfield having another chance before the break.
But the Swiss club couldn't add to their tally and were made to pay for it in injury-time when Aiden McGeady levelled for Spartak, knocking Basel out of the Europa League.
Elsewhere, Brad Jones wasn't in the Liverpool squad which defeated Sparta Praha 1-0 to move into the final 16.
