FORMER Socceroo Scott Chipperfield played his part as FC Basel went within minutes of a shock of huge proportions in the Uefa Champions League on Tuesday after a 3-3 draw at Manchester United.
The experienced Australian came off the bench for Basel on 77 minutes after his side had scored three second-half goals in less than 20 minutes to overturn United's early two-goal lead.
Chipperfield, who replaced Basel's first goalscorer Fabian Frei, provided an extra body in midfield as they tried to hold on for victory.
However, Ashley Young struck in stoppage-time to rescue a point for last season's beaten finalists.
Elsewhere on Tuesday, Socceroos keeper Adam Federici made a series of top-class saves to help Reading come from two goals down to win 3-2 at Neil Kilkenny's Bristol City in England's Championship.
The Aussie shot-stopper made fine saves to deny Ryan McGivern and Albert Adomah in the second-half before the Royals fired in three goals in the final 20 minutes.
Reading boss Brian McDermott said: "At 2-0 down Adam [Federici] kept us in the game with a number of top class saves.”
