On 11 minutes, Chipperfield glanced a header to set up Marco Streller who scored the opener with a nice volleyed finish.

Twenty minutes later, Streller returned the favour, holding the ball up well inside the box before cutting it back for Chipperfield who stroked it home with his right-foot to double Basel's advantage.

On 57 minutes, the Aussie completed his brace when he swooped on a loose ball after Carlitos' shot was blocked, with Chipperfield coolly placing his strike past the Bellinzona keeper.

With quarter of an hour to go, Chipperfield combined with Streller again, playing a nice throughball for the Swiss striker to slot in for the fourth.

In Holland's Eredivisie, Socceroo David Carney was an unused substitute as FC Twente defeated NAC Breda 2-0 to claim the Dutch league title. The Eredivisie title is Twente's first since 1926.

Elsewhere in the Netherlands, Brett Holman came off the bench on 73 minutes as AZ Alkmaar drew 1-1 with PSV Eindhoven. James Holland was not in the AZ squad.

In England's Premier League, Socceroos custodian Mark Schwarzer made some good saves as Fulham defeated West Ham United 3-2.

In England's Championship, Aussie shot-stopper Brad Jones was sent off as Middlesbrough lost 2-0 to promotion-chasing Leicester City.

Jones, who had made some good saves during the match, was harshly given his marching orders on 84 minutes for bringing down Leicester's Lloyd Dyer.

Fellow Aussie Scott McDonald played a full game up front without much luck, while Rhys Williams is on the sidelines with a pelvic problem.

Elsewhere in England's second tier, Sydney FC and Perth Glory target Nick Carle was an unused sub as Crystal Palace drew 2-2 at Sheffield Wednesday to stay in the division, while Adam Federici was beaten by one of the goals of the season as Reading thumped Preston 4-1.

In Turkey's Super Lig, Australian goalkeeper Michael Petkovic made a comical error in struggling Sivasspor's 1-1 draw with Kasimpasa.

Petkovic, who has been in and out of the Sivasspor side this season, raced out of his area to defend a hopeful Kasimpasa punt forward only to get in a mix-up with teammate Yasin Cakmak allowing Gokhan Gulec to score from close-range.

In Italy's Serie A, Socceroos midfielder Mark Bresciano wasn't in the Palermo side which won 2-1 at Siena to keep alive their UEFA Champions League hopes. Bresciano has been struggling with a back problem.

In Germany's 2.Bundesliga, World Cup hopeful Dario Vidosic put in a full shift for MSV Duisburg as they slipped to a 1-0 home defeat against Karlsruhe SC.

In Portugal's Liga Sagres, young Aussie Jason Davidson was an unused substitute as Pacos Ferreira lost 1-0 at Sporting Braga.

In Sweden's Allsvenskan, Socceroos shot-stopper Ante Covic was an unused sub as IF Elfsborg drew 1-1 at Atvidabergs. Covic has lost his number one spot at Elfsborg to Joakim Wulff since being sent off a fortnight ago.

In Norway's Eliteserien, Socceroos defender Jade North was an unused sub as Tromso held off champions Rosenborg to draw 0-0. Tromso remain top in Norway.

In Denmark's Superliga, teenage Aussie striker Brent McGrath did not play as Brondby lost 2-0 at home to FC Copenhagen.

In Greece's Beta Ethniki, Nathan Burns' AO Kerkyra clinched promotion to the Super League after a 0-0 draw with Panaitolikos Agrinio. Burns started and played 70 minutes in the draw.
