AUSSIES ABROAD: Former Socceroo Scott Chipperfield has helped Swiss champions FC Basel qualify for the UEFA Champions League after a 3-0 win at Sheriff Tiraspol overnight.
Chipperfield was a 78th minute substitute in the victory which sealed a 4-0 aggregate triumph over the Moldovan side.
And like Chipperfield's introduction, the goals came late, with Marco Streller breaking the deadlock against a resolute Sheriff side on 74 minutes.
After Sheriff's Vaja Tarkhnishvili was sent off on 77 minutes, Swiss international Alexander Frei grabbed a late brace to seal Basel's place in this season's Champions League.
Chipperfield joins FC Twente's David Carney as the only Australians set to compete in this season's UEFA Champions League.
Elsewhere overnight, recalled Socceroos striker Scott McDonald scored his third goal of the new season with a strike in Middlesbrough's 2-1 loss at Millwall in the Carling Cup.
McDonald netted a consolation goal for Boro on 89 minutes, although Millwall stopper David Forde was partly to blame for the strike after misjudging the Aussie's shot.
Elsewhere in the Carling Cup, Brett Emerton played a full game, while Vince Grella started and got through just over an hour as Blackburn defeated Norwich City 3-1.
Emerton was busy down the right flank for Rovers, while Grella's early return from a calf injury was solid as he kept things ticking in midfield.
Socceroo Richard Garcia put in a full shift as Hull City lost 2-1 at Brentford, while fellow Australia international Adam Federici was rested on the bench as Reading drew 3-3 with Northampton before being knocked out on penalties.
Neil Kilkenny put in a full 90 minutes as Leeds lost 2-1 to Leicester, James Wesolowski played a full game as Peterborough defeated Cardiff 2-1, youngster Bailey Wright was a 46th minute sub as Preston won 2-1 at Bradford after extra-time, while Shane Cansdell-Sherriff put in a full shift as Shrewsbury lost 2-1 at Premiership side Stoke City.
Finally in Scotland's CIS Insurance Cup, Young Socceroo Ryan McGowan missed out as Hearts cruised past Elgin 4-0.
