Romania captain Cristian Chivu has confirmed he will be leaving Roma to join Serie A rivals Internazionale.
During a press conference at Roma's training ground on Friday, the 26-year-old defender explained his decision to join the defending Italian champions, ending a long-running transfer saga.
"I could not have missed this train," he said.
"It was a choice for my life and work and I have no regrets, if not a touch of sorrow because it is not easy to leave a place where I have felt so happy."
Chivu was targeted by Inter at the end of last season, but Real Madrid and Barcelona threw their hats into the ring for his services.
Sensing a price-war, Inter officially withdrew their interest, but the player himself turned down the chance to move to Spain, admitting Italy has become his second home.
"I wanted to stay in Italy," he added. "I was not in agreement (with Real), and with all respect to one of the best clubs in the world, I don't think I have to explain my reasons.
"This was my choice and I am happy that Roma made a deal with Inter at a similar value, which means I have not caused any damage to the Giallorossi."
Chivu admitted his decision might upset the Roma fans, saying: "I can understand the fans whistles because I was loved here and maybe some fans felt betrayed.
"But Roma and its fans will always remain in my heart. My conscience is clean."
