Melbourne City have confirmed young defender Nathaniel Atkinson has injured ligaments in his left ankle in Sunday’s 5-0 win against Adelaide United at AAMI Park.
City put out a club statement on Monday evening, confirming the injury but failing to provide an update on the timeframe on his recovery.
Atkinson has begun his rehabilitation whereby he'll be on the sidelines for potentially to six to 12 months depending on the grade of the ligament injury.
The Launceston-born 18-year-old had to be stretchered off late in Sunday's game, having fallen awkwardly under his own weight.
Atkinson has made eight appearances in the A-League this season.
