Clapham, a former New Zealand Under-20 international, was one of two uncapped players, along with Winston Reid, named in Ricki Herbert's 23-man squad on Monday.

The 23-year-old has had a stellar season with Canterbury United in the New Zealand Football Championship, but until a few weeks ago was largely unknown.

However, selection for this month's camp for Australasian-based All Whites players, plus other World Cup hopefuls, propelled him into the spotlight and now Clapham will get to enjoy the ultimate experience in football's showpiece event.

"I was with 10 or 11 others, having a few quiet drinks and cheering the team on (against Bahrain), like the rest of New Zealand, not imagining I would be here now," a delighted Clapham told The Press newspaper.

"Then to be in camp with the team, then finally to be in the squad, it's absolutely unbelievable.

"It's so exciting. Every day since I was a little kid I hoped and dreamed this would happen."

Clapham, who was named the NZFC player of the year last week, insists he is not going just to make up the numbers.

"Obviously it's a 23-man squad but no-one is going just for a holiday," he added. "Everyone's going to be pushing for a spot. I'm no different."

The New Zealanders will assemble in Auckland on May 19 ahead of a warm-up game against Australia in Melbourne on May 24.

The All Whites then head to Europe for further matches against Serbia, Slovenia and Chile before their tournament opener against Group F opponents Slovakia in Rustenburg on June 15.
