AUSTRALIA coach Holger Osieck says the Socceroos need to be more clinical after spurning a number of scoring opportunities in Friday's Asian Cup 1-1 draw with Korea Republic.
Harry Kewell failed to hit the target with a hat-trick of first-half opportunities, while Tim Cahill was also guilty of wasting another fine chance when he dwelled on the ball too long allowing Cha Du-Ri to intercept inside the box.
"That was definitely something we have to talk about. Normally you don't get so many chances and we did today and definitely have to be more clinical in our finishing," Osieck told Fox Sports.
He added: "It was a very intense match. It was definitely what we expected.
"We really tried to play very constructed. We had a number of opportunities but we could only score one goal. But it was a very, very good performance and the point I think is okay, you can accept it.
"The attitude of our team was first-class. I'm very happy with the way the boys showed themselves on the pitch."
Osieck also had plenty of praise for his senior players such as Kewell and skipper Lucas Neill who silenced some critics with good displays against the Taeguk Warriors.
"As I always say, people talk about them as if they're already over the hill. But they showed today what they still can do. They're excellent players and they proved it again today," he said.
Neill appeared confident the Socceroos could progress top of Group C and was satisfied with the result.
"It was a bit of a scrappy game, but a great game to be involved in. Credit to both teams and I'd like to think both those teams are going to go the whole way," he said.
"We still can top the group which is the goal. We want to be in the latter stages and we'll just keep going the way we are."
Neill also had something to say to his opponents who questioned Australia's ageing side.
"Going in the Koreans were saying 'we're too old', they're going to out-run and I think we out-ran them and showed good stamina and good spirit," he said.
Australia's final group match is against Bahrain on Tuesday.
