Western Sydney Wanderers defender Jack Clisby says it was a "massive" kick in the guts to be bundled out of the FFA Cup before the final hurdle.
Wanderers were hoping to set up a Sydney Derby showdown with the Sky Blues next month but Adelaide United had other ideas, defeating the home side 2-1 at Campbelltown Stadium on Tuesday night.
Post-match Clisby told Fox Sports the Wanderers didn't take their chances.
"We started really slowly a bit sluggish," he said.
"I think after they scored the goal we definitely picked up our game and stuck to our game plan and I feel we were a threat at times - especially in the first half, in the wide areas we were demaging them a bit," he said.
"It seemed that they left areas probably trying to make us go wide - it was very over-run in the midfield. They made it hard for us to break them down but I still feel we had chances to score it was just one of those days when we couldn't convert."
The home side dominated possession and chances but Adelaide was able to do more with less. Even so, a nerve-rattling Panenka penalty kick by Brendon Santalab threw Hayden Fox's side a lifeline with 20 minutes still on the clock.
But goals in each half to Adelaide imports Johan Absalonsen (13') and Daniel Adlung (58') saw inaugural Cup winners, Adelaide, book a Cup final with Sydney FC on November 21.
Clisby admitted is was a massive let down: "There was a grand final at stake so we're obviously not happy."
