Newcastle Jets and Perth Glory are both believed to be in the running to offer the 33 year old a home when his current contract at Swiss club Basel runs out at the end of the season.

Chipperfield's family are understood to have spent the weekend in Newcastle examining the club, the city and the lifestyle ahead of making any decisions on a move there.

Scott Chipperfield's wife Stefanie is key to any decision and she is understood to have been shown around the city on Friday.

The Jets are believed to have set a deadline of 12.30 yesterday afternoon for a decision from Chipperfield, but that has now been extended to give the family more time.

The extension was given after Perth Glory made a late run for the leftback, following Fury's decision to end negotiations with the star after protracted talks.

Chippers would not be eligible for the group stage of the Asian Champions League if he did sign up to the Jets as squads for that competition had to be finalised last month.

He also has to see out the end of his contract with Basel.

Newcastle Jets are in a position to potentially offer him a marquee role at the club, unlike Fury who had signed up Robbie Fowler for that position.

Joel Griffiths is currently the club's marquee but is on loan to Beijing Guoan until the end of the year. If he decides to return to the Jets, the club can either choose to keep him as marquee, or fit in the remainder of his salary for the rest of the season into the salary cap.

That leaves the option for them to bring in an alternative marquee star like Chipperfield outside the salary cap. Perth Glory currently have no marquee star since Stan Lazaridis left the club.

Fury backed out of their talks with Chipperfield after discovering he was dealing with Fury's A-League rivals and his current club.

""He's also talking with other A-League teams," admitted Fury chairman Don Matheson. "That's no doubt slowed things down a bit in terms of Scott being able to make a decision about his playing future.

"Time has run out and North Queensland Fury FC has decided to end our negotiations with Scott."
