The Dutch took the lead through Robin van Persie's strike but Ivelin Popov equalised just after the break at the Amsterdam ArenA.

The visitors then earned an unexpected win over the 2010 FIFA World Cup finalists when Ilyain Mitsanski scored in the 93rd minute following Heitinga's misplaced pass.

Speaking after the shock defeat, Van Marwijk was brutally honest with his assessment of the game, pointing the finger at Heitinga.

"The last 30 minutes has annoyed me. A pass like Heitinga's is just forbidden. You just don't do that. Now we have lost and that's not good," he told SBS.

Despite the result, the former Feyenoord manager did take some positives from the fixture.

"I think the first half was quite good, especially in comparison with our last games," he said.

"We didn't create many chances, but there were some situations where we actually should have scored. The last half hour has ruined everything. We haven't been ourselves anymore."

Arjen Robben thanked the Netherlands fans for their support, claiming he has 'never had a week like this' before.

The winger was booed by supporters of his club side, Bayern Munich, when the German giants faced Netherlands in a friendly last week. Bayern fans voiced their disapproval after the 28-year-old missed an extra-time penalty in a Champions League final shootout defeat to Chelsea.

But Robben has received positive words from a number of his colleagues, and after Netherland's 2-1 loss, the former Real Madrid man was full of praise for fans from his homeland.

"I want to thank the Dutch supporters (for a standing ovation). It's fantastic to receive so much support. I never had a week like this; it was very hard but that's the life of a professional athlete," Robben told SBS.

"Sometimes everyone thinks you're a p***k and sometimes you're a hero. Last week, I was a p***k. But I will be there on June 9 (for Netherlands' Euro 2012 opener with Denmark), I can assure you."

Everton defender Heitinga called on the Netherlands to learn from the defeat as they prepare for the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine next month.

"We didn't create any chances and in the end, because of my mistake they scored to make it 2-1 and they won the game," he said.

"It is a friendly game, you need to learn from this and we need to focus for the next period."
