Both coaches in Friday night's five-goal thriller at AAMI Park have lamented key decisions in the A-League clash.
Brisbane Roar boss John Aloisi believes referee Chris Beath made three wrong calls which changed the game in their 3-2 loss to Melbourne Victory.
The biggest talking point was the dismissal of Victory's Besart Berisha, as his elbow appeared to connect with the face or throat of Roar's Luke DeVere in the 58th minute. Replays suggest the contact was minimal.
James Troisi opened the scoring from a free kick in the 12th minute after Matt McKay allegedly fouled Berisha on the edge of the box.
The third goal came from a spot kick as Berisha went to ground in the box from Devere’s chase, just before the half hour mark which was subsequently converted by the Albanian.
Aloisi said: “DeVere obviously got hit, do I think it was a red card? No. I thought it was a bit soft,” Aloisi said.
“Do I think the Troisi goal was a free kick from Matt McKay on Bes? Matty is one of the smallest players in the league and not that strong… very soft.
“And the penalty… Besart doesn’t even appeal for it. So he’s got three decisions wrong in my opinion.”
And just before half-time McKay had a give-and-go with Arana which resulted in the captain’s shot saved by Lawrence Thomas, but a goal kick was awarded to Victory.
It left the Roar coach bemused with the linesman.
“We felt at half-time we had that chance, it was a great save and the ref gave a goal kick,” he said.
“I don’t really want to go on about it because… I can’t believe it sometimes when I’m seeing it with my own eyes and he’s giving different decisions to what everyone else is seeing.”
Victory coach Kevin Muscat said he saw the replay and felt Berisha was unlucky to be sent off.
He also said DeVere told the officials he did not want the Albanian to be dismissed.
“I haven’t come across anyone who says it was a red card,” Muscat said.
“Luke DeVere comes up to me after the game and was embarrassed because he said ‘I wasn’t making a meal of it, it was accidental and I told the referee that’. They were his words not mine and I haven’t seen it since then.
“Subsequently I’ve seen it… the ball was coming up to him and he’s put his arms out, he doesn’t even know where Luke DeVere is. But a decision’s been made and we move on.
“I’ve got no reason not to believe Luke he made an effort to come over to me and express his thoughts. We’ll take his word for it and I’m comfortable with that.”
Muscat was also resigned to losing Berisha for their upcoming game against Wellington Phoenix away on Tuesday.
He added: “I don’t think there’s any grounds (for us) to do so (appeal the decision).
