Cole took to the micro blogging site earlier this month to launch a foul-mouthed tirade at the FA in response to an official disciplinary report on the John Terry racism case.

The punishment comes three months after Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was fined 45,000 pounds for promoting a message with racial undertones on Twitter.

The FA seem determined to eradicate such online indiscretions, having published a set of guidelines for social media use on Wednesday.

The code of conduct bans England internationals from tweeting about a game in the 24 hours prior to kick-off, and warns that any messages discussing 'the opposition, management or individuals could all result in disciplinary action'.
