The Wanderers booked their spot in the round of 16 with a 3-2 win over Wellington Phoenix. In the past two years Western Sydney were knocked out in a huge upset by Adelaide City in the round of 32 and beaten by Perth Glory on penalties in the quarter-finals.

The Wanderers have always been in the hunt for silverware in their short existence and Cole told FourFourTwo the FFA Cup is on their hit list.

"It's a trophy we haven't really had a good crack at and we are determined to put in a solid performance again next round," he said.

"The boring old cliche one game at a time couldn't be more true than in a cup scenario."

Western Sydney got past the Phoenix thanks to a second half strike from Mitch Nichols. The Kiwi side took an early 2-0 lead with goals from Hamish Watson and Kosta Barbarouses, before the score was tied up with a double from young forward Lachlan Scott.

"We took a while to find a comfortable rhythm in our play," Cole admitted.

"They did well with limited chances to be up 2-0. The challenge then was ours to show how badly we want to succeed in this cup. We scored three very good goals and played some very good football.

"It was a great feeling throughout the team to come from 2-0 down and win. The ability to do that is a character trait that a winning team must possess and as our first competitive game of 2016/2017, there were plenty of positives and plenty of learning opportunities to take into the next round."

The left-sided utility said the Wanderers have no preference on who they draw in the next round.

"We will be positive about whatever the match up is and embrace whatever the draw provides," Cole said.
