John Collins has hailed the "great achievement" of Alex McLeish's Scotland side after beating France in Paris to go top of their group.
The Hibernian boss, a former Scotland international who represented his country between 1988 and 1999, was highly impressed by the quality and work-rate on show in the Parc de Princes.
He told Radio Five Live: "It was a fantastic result, really fantastic. We went in hope rather than expectation but to come away with three points and top of the group is a great achievement."
Collins, meanwhile, singled out goalscorer James McFadden and £9million Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon for their efforts.
"Praise goes to the manager and all the players for their work ethic - they fought for every ball. But special credit goes to the goalscorer and goalkeeper - he (Gordon) is world class.
"We got worked a couple of times but we had a goalkeeper who last night was in the right place at the all times.
"The goal came at a perfect time for us. They were a bit tired and then we scored and it re-energised us."
Celtic midfielder Scott Brown, who Collins managed during the player's time at Easter Road, was another star for the Scots and he has been tipped as a future Barclays Premier League star.
Collins said: "After the first couple of games last year, I knew Scott was a top quality player.
"We got £4.5million for him but already his value is soaring. One day he will move to the Premier League. He's got an engine, he's all over the park and last night he did his defensive duties very well."
Collins' former international team-mate was equally pleased by last night's result - their second successive win over the World Cup finalists.
He added: "I think we have to enjoy the occasion.
"It's not often we go to a world-class country and come away with a victory - it was phenomenal.
"To come away with three points from France is fantastic."
"As pessimistic Scots, we'll think 'we have to hang on in there' but if we do (qualify for Euro 2008) it'll be fantastic."
