As Colosimo rightly points out, he's been around too long to get caught up in the speculation over what might be. And that includes the question of being loaned out after this A-League season to keep him match fit for a possible Socceroo recall.

What is clear, however, is that at 30, the former Carlton, Perth Glory and Manchester City journeyman has finally found his feet in the Harbour City after a stellar season under Vitezslav Lavicka.

For many, the visionary defender with the cool touch would not look out of place as a squad - or even starting XI - defender in the current Socceroos.

But he'd need to be playing club football at a high level in the lead-in to South Africa for that to happen, and Colosimo says there are no plans for a move...yet.

"To be honest, it's exactly like the World Cup and Socceroo question. I haven't thought about it up until now. And while I haven't thought about it, things have been going fairly well. So I'm just going to leave it be," he told au.fourfourtwo.com.

"What comes, comes. Family comes first but everything after that I'm fairly easy-going about. What will  be, will be.

"A lot of people might think my answer's diplomatic but it's not. It's a lot of wasted energy  for nothing. The only thing I can control is what I do each week."

Verbeek has stayed in touch with Colosimo over the last year or so and has impressed the former Sivasspor player with his Hiddink-like knowledge of how each current and prospective player is performing on and off the park.

"Pim's one of those coaches who knows what every single player is doing at every time, whether it be training or playing," said Colosimo.

"He's got his spies out so he knows what's going on and he knows every player and makes the time to say hello and ask some questions, which makes a big difference."

Colosimo argues the national team's defence should not even be subject to speculation about his or anyone else's claims. He says the Socceroo defence has coped just fine without him.

"Is it the issue?" he asked. "It's all about opinions but I don't think we've conceded many goals. So stats don't lie, results don't lie. The boys qualified for the World Cup fairly easily.

"There is always that perception of what's better... if the opportunity comes great but those boys are doing a good job - especially Lucas and Moorey.

"Every time they're next to each other there's a great belief amongst every player... but it doesn't mean I don't want the opportunity."

This season the 26-times capped Socceroo has earned the plaudits in the heart of the sky blue rearguard. It's why many pundits continue to push for his selection opportunity with the national team - despite not being picked in Pim Verbeek's latest squad for the Asian Cup qualifier on November 14 in Oman.

He might get his chance though. The first Socceroo game of 2010 will be another qualifier - this time in Kuwait City - and it's likely to be A-League dominated.

Talk of a national team recall - his last was in at 2007 against China in a friendly - has been welcomed by Colosimo in a wry kind of way.

"It puts a little smirk on your face knowing that there is that [the speculation]," he said. "But I think hard work pays off eventually, be that winning an A-League championship here or if I get another opportunity with the national team.

"The talk's just talk. Getting to this age has made me realise all those things are out of my control. The only thing I can control is how I prepare myself before a season and before a game and a training session and what I do out on the pitch."

What he's done on the pitch has in part been due to a clean bill of health after last season's nightmare run with injuries and it shows.

"I feel like a kid again," Colosimo said. "Every time I wake up it's great to know I and we have worked hard in pre-season to get that base [fitness] right and to be able to go full on every weekend.

"You can only do that by being in physically good shape and that's where I am at the moment."

In the meantime, Colosimo and his sky blue teammates head to the Gold Coast later today for a clash with  troubled Gold Coast United at Skilled Park.

Colosimo is set to be partnered by the returning Stephan Keller for Saturday night's clash. The big Swiss has missed four matches due to a knee injury but completed training on Thursday ahead of the interstate trip.

Sydney's Kofi Danning and Rhyan Grant will miss out due to international youth commitments with Australia.
