EXCLUSIVE: Melbourne Heart skipper Simon Colosimo says his team must accept media criticism following their lacklustre 4-0 loss to a rampant Brisbane Roar last weekend.
Fox Sports’ pundit and former Socceroo Mark Bosnich pulled no punches after the loss, describing Heart’s performance as a “disgrace”.
Only Heart keeper Clint Bolton and defender Michael Marrone escaped the wrath of the former Manchester United and Chelsea keeper after the one-sided game at Suncorp.
Colosimo agreed their performance was not of the standard expected.
But he said that it was up to the players to restore Heart’s faltering reputation – starting with the rescheduled A-League Melbourne derby on October 8 which will be their first chance to put things right since the Suncorp mauling.
“I thought that our performance wasn’t good enough,” Colosimo told au.fourfourtwo.com. “But to call our performance a disgrace is… look, they are strong words.
"Everyone’s got the right to their own opinion and I’m sure if we turn it around and have a good game against Victory he’ll turn around and say it was brilliant.
The defender admitted media scrutiny is all part of the game but said: “I’m sure there were some pretty strong words about Roar when they lost 3-0 a few weeks ago against Victory.
“What he [Bosnich] said he said, but what’s been done on the field is up to us. It’s one of those things you’ll get from the media but take nothing away, we were poor. No doubt.”
While the delayed Melbourne derby will be the first chance for Heart to put things right, Colosimo paid tribute to Ange Postecoglou's men after one of the most emphatic displays of the season.
“We know the performance as a whole wasn’t good enough," he said. "But we’ve still got to look forward and take as many positives out of it as possible.
"And we’ll be doing that and getting ourselves right for the game next week. They were excellent and took their chances. They were very, very good.
"It’s not the first time we’ve seen a team dominate another team in the A-League and it won’t be the last.”
Colosimo, 31, was at the AIS in Canberra in recent days to lend his support to the final group of unsigned players at Nike’s The Chance Pacific Trials.
And he said his Heart team-mate John Aloisi was keen for a scouting report on potential undiscovered gems at the three-day camp.
Aloisi – who’ll take over as coach of Heart’s inaugural NYL side next year – had been looking for talent at the Melbourne Nike trials ahead of his inaugural season as a coach in 2011.
Colosimo added: “I’m sure he’ll be in my ear when I get back to Melbourne and asking me for some names.”
