The match was a battle of Scottish Premier League strugglers, with the third-from-bottom Hearts only one spot above St Mirren on the table.

But both sides have performed well in the League Cup and delivered an exciting final in front of a big crowd in Glasgow.

Hearts midfielder Ryan Stevenson fired the Edinburgh side ahead after just 10 minutes but St Mirren levelled nine minutes before the break.

The important goal came from Portuguese striker Esmael Goncalves and more joy was to come after the half-time break for St Mirren.

Firstly Stephen Thompson gave them the lead just seconds into the second half before Englishman Conor Newton struck what looked to be the sealer with 24 minutes remaining.

Stevenson gave Hearts a lifeline with five minutes left but they could not muster an equaliser as St Mirren celebrated winning their first trophy in seven years.
