The newly-formed football pitches will officially open on June 5 after members of the Euro 2012 team donated their match bonuses to fund the project.

The field, which is situated in the city's Bronowice neighbourhood, marks the sixth completed site by the Foundation and adheres to 14 rules to teach children to have respect for each other, among other things, both on and off the pitch.

Speaking to reporters, Netherlands captain Mark van Bommel said of the project: "My team-mates in the Netherlands team and I, we all had a place near our homes where we could play football. A place where we could develop our skills and meet our friends.

"All these hours in the street made us into the football players we are today.

"As representatives of the Netherlands we feel privileged to be playing at the European Championships. But we do not come here to play and perform in the EC only. We want to support the local community as well.

"Therefore we would like to give the children of Bronowice what we found so valuable in our own youth: a safe place to play and have fun.

"When playing sport, children also learn to deal with winning and losing. They learn that they have to help each other in order to reach their goals. These skills will also help them in their further life."
