Kamau's deflected shot off Carl Valeri on 65 minutes broke the deadlock to upstage Melbourne Victory 2-1 at Etihad Stadium and send City rocketing to the top of the table.

It was the third goal in two games for the Kenyan-born flyer and came after imports for both sides, City's Marcin Budzinski (45 +3') and Victory's Leroy George (55') - put the game at one-all.

For Kevin Muscat's men, who welcomed back the team's internationals, it was back-to-back home losses for the first time since 05/06.

"Yeah I was getting a bit tired and I was very lucky with the deflection, but a goal's a goal and I'll take it anyway," the 22-year-old told Fox Sports after his decisive solo run.

"I think it's just a case of confidence, you get one and it kind of gives you the confidence to get more goals and you continue scoring."

City may have sacrificed their bravado in attack but new coach Warren Joyce has ensured they aren't leaking a vast number of goals at the other end either.

"We're slowly building into the season," Kamau said.

"The first couple of games we've come away with big results. We'll continue to build and hopefully get better with each game.
