EXCLUSIVE: Steve Corica will decide whether to hang up his boots at the end of this season and focus his efforts on coaching.
The influential Sydney FC star is relishing another A-League campaign but admits it will be time to take stock when the last ball is kicked.
He told au.fourfourtwo.com: “My fitness is good and I feel good but I’m not sure yet whether this will be my last season. I’ll decide at the end (of the season).
“It will depend on the legs and obviously the fitness but I still feel sharp.”
Corica, 35, has taken on some coaching responsibilities with the club’s youngsters this season alongside Youth League boss Steve O’Connor.
He said: “I’m enjoying that and I’ve also been doing some coaching in Manly. It’s enjoyable and great to learn from someone like Steve.
“But I’m still a Sydney FC player and I’m looking forward to being part of a team that wants to achieve something this year.
“There’s expectation and pressure but we want to finish top of the pile. Pre-season has been a bit up and down with injuries and some of the boys away at the Olympics but we’re still in a position where we could get to the final of the Pre-Season Cup and it would be great to start the season having won it.”
While Corica is contemplating possible retirement, he can take heart in helping reignite the playing career of a fellow professional.
Corica was thwarted from the penalty spot by Mark Bosnich on Sunday, a save which generated headlines around the world.
The Sydney FC man joked said: “It wasn’t the best penalty was it? No, he (Bosnich) did a good job I thought, especially as that was the first game he’s had in a long time.
“He’s still got it. I’m sure the Mariners are glad to have him and I think he’s a good character to have in the A-League. He’s a lively character and he loves being out there.
“I think he’s 36 but goalkeepers go on until they’re 38, 39 or more anyway.
“He’s had tremendous experience playing with some of the biggest clubs in the world and I’m sure the young keepers in this league can learn from him.
“Hopefully he can sort himself out with a longer contract.”
