Coyne returned to the Colchester starting line-up at the weekend and his performance against Oldham Athletic has earned him a spot in the League One team of the week.

However, Colchester boss Paul Lambert is not a huge fan of the defender's midweek trips to the other side of the world and spoke out after Coyne failed to feature against Japan back in February.

Coyne accepts that Colchester pay his wages but he isn't going to be drawn into choosing between club and country.

He told the Essex Gazette: "I've sat down and spoken to the manager about it and he has every right to voice his concerns.

"They pay my wages and they're who I'm contracted to for another two-and-a-half years.

"I've been unavailable for large amounts of this season but when it comes to club and country, I know where my bread is buttered.

"But the honour of pulling on that green and gold shirt is something that I've always worked hard for.

"It's something I've wanted to do throughout my whole career so I'm not going to throw it away now."

Coyne could soon be facing another club versus country test as Australia's World Cup qualifier with Uzbekistan would leave him facing the prospect of missing Colchester's clash with Millwall.
