THE Columbus Crew moved three points clear at the top of Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference by beating the Chicago Fire 2-1 in a match which saw all three goals arrive in a three-minute period just before half-time.
Adam Moffat put Columbus ahead in the 43rd minute only for his team-mate Frankie Hejduk to get the visitors back on level terms a minute later by putting through his own net.
However, the error did not prove costly as Jason Garey restored the hosts' advantage before the interval to condemn the Fire to a first defeat in six MLS games.
Elsewhere, David Ferreira's 58th-minute penalty was the difference between the sides as FC Dallas edged the Kansas City Wizards 1-0 to move up to third in the Western Conference.
Saturday night's other two MLS matches finished in 1-1 draws.
Blair Gavin was on target three minutes before the break for Chivas USA to cancel out Danny Mwanga's 21st-minute opener for Philadelphia Union.
Andy Najar secured a point for DC United at the San Jose Earthquakes, levelling nine minutes into the second half after Ike Opara had given the home side a 16th-minute advantage.
