The 45-year-old has left second division side Sao Caetano, this year's Campeonato Paulista finalists, to take the reins at Cruzeiro.

Autuori stepped down after the team lost 4-0 to Atletico Mineiro in the first leg of the Campeonato Mineiro finals and the club confirmed his successor's appointment on their official website www.cruzeiro.com.br on Tuesday.

Club spokesman Valdir Barbosa said: "Among the names that were being considered, Dorival is a winner. He has won two state championships and reached the final of the Campeonato Paulista.

"He is a coach from the new generation, who has shown a lot of promise, especially this year. His profile is similar to Cruzeiro's."

Dorival Junior's first game in charge will be on Saturday when Cruzeiro visit Fluminense in their first game in the Campeonato Brasileiro.

He has also managed Figueirense, Fortaleza, Criciuma, Juventude, Sport and Avai.
