JASON Culina says the Socceroos are ready to flick the switch and entertain an expected sellout crowd next Wednesday night in their crucial World Cup qualifier against Uzbekistan
"We went to Japan and got the point we wanted and did that very professionally. Now it's time we stepped it up a bit," the PSV midfielder said today from the Socceroo team hotel.
"We all like scoring, we all like attacking and I'm sure we'll be doing that on Wednesday night.
"I think the fans should have a high expectation [for an attacking Socceroos] because we do. We always want to win."
The Socceroos are tantalisingly close to World Cup qualification when they take on the side currently bottom of the group.
Uzbekistan play on Saturday in Tashkent against Qatar then fly to Sydney. They are expected to arrive early Monday morning in a scenario the Socceroos know all too well from their previous World Cup fly-ins.
By contrast, the Socceroos are enjoying a relaxed week in camp before preparations step up in intensity this weekend ahead of next Wednesday night. Culina said the extra time in camp is a huge factor.
"Now we can go into next Wednesday night's game playing a more attacking game. A brand of football we prefer to play. I enjoy playing attacking football," the former Sydney United and Ajax player said.
"And with the extra preparation, we're all very confident that it's going to be a good game, an exciting game for the fans and hopefully a lot of goals.
"Each game brings a different situation," Culina added.
"Our preparations away to Japan and Bahrain were a little difficult so you can't expect to go there and win 4-0.
"You can see last time we were home [against Qatar] compared to our away performances. We can prepare a lot better and get over the jet lag as well as go through the tactical things with Pim.
"It's a situation where we can play our best football."
As for his move to Gold Coast United for the start of next season's A-League, Culina said with a smile that his transfer has been discussed amongst the rest of the squad. "They're all jealous".
