Culina, 53, coached the Jets to a memorable 2-1 victory over David Beckham's Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday evening in front of over 23,000 fans at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

The occasion was something the Newcastle coach never envisaged prior to Tinkler's arrival at the club, with the mining millionaire since signing Culina to a five-year contract securing his services until 2015.

Culina told The Age he was contemplating retirement before Tinkler's 'unbelievable' impact at Newcastle.

"It's just been unbelievable, since the new takeover, it's fabulous," Culina said.

"I was thinking about giving the game away pretty much to be honest at the end of this season.

"Then we had a change of ownership and the boss said, `I want you here for another five years' and I thought 'whoa'.

"So it's a dream come true but it's only the beginning."

Culina added he hoped the club could build on the LA Galaxy friendly with the fixture capturing the imagination of the local public and bringing in a huge crowd.

"Apart from playing against Galaxy and doing well against them it was so important to do well because there was a lot of people who came to see Beckham but hopefully to see Newcastle Jets and what we have to offer," Culina said.

"I hope they enjoyed it and I hope they come back."

Culina continued he also wants to build the team on the field into a side which wins trophies.

"We have to do well when it really matters," Culina said.

"No disrespect to (the Galaxy friendly) in many ways, but it's all about winning silverware and it's changing Newcastle Jets from being a team to a club.

"That's what we need to build and ifwe can achieve that then we'll top it."
