Culina, 32,  who has not played a competitive match since the Asian Cup in January last year, has spent the past month building up his fitness under Sydney FC physio Stan Ivancic.

"Jason is progressing very well and we expect that in a couple of weeks discussions will take place,” his agent Leo Karis told au.fourfourtwo.com.

“He was offered the opportunity to do his rehab with Sydney but there was no formal agreement to play with Sydney. But once medical staff there and Jason feel the time is right a discussion will take place.”

It sets up a mouth-watering prospect for fans of the harbour city club, with former Juventus great Alessandro Del Piero arriving from Turin next week and national team stalwart Brett Emerton already on the books.

The 58-times capped Socceroo was dumped by Newcastle Jets after it was revealed further knee surgery would rule him out of the 2011/12 A-League season.

While no formal talks have yet to take place with the Sky Blues, those close to the midfielder are pleased with his recovery from a career threatening injury.

Sydney FC fans have been delighted to see Culina training in the Sky Blues jersey, after coach Ian Crook decided it would help the former PSV Eindhoven player feel at home during his rehabilitation.
