WORLD Cups have often made heroes of previously unknown or unheralded footballer players.
Sometimes for their ability on the pitch (Josimar), sometimes for their appearance (Lalas) or their unconventional play (Chilavert) or dress sense (Campos). But no player has achieved cult hero status at a World Cup finals quite like a 38 year old Cameroonian striker called Roger Milla did in 1990. Personally pursuaded to return from retirement to the national team by the nation's President, Milla raced to the corner flag after scoring against Romania and spontaneously invented a goal celebration that became his trademark and a new template for pub footballers everywhere. A Milla-led Cameroon defied the odds to make it the quarter-finals before their exit but not before giving England the shock of their lives and leading 2-1 after outplaying England for large parts of the game. Believe it or not, Milla returned in 1994 to become the oldest goalscorer in World Cup finals at the ripe old age of 42.
Here are both Roger's goals from the round of 16 game in Italia 90 where for his second goal he disposed maverick Colombian keeper Rene Higuita leaving him free to tuck away his finish and head for the corner again!
