Ipswich midfielder David Norris believes tonight's win over Arsenal in the opening leg of the Carling Cup semi-finals was the perfect response to their FA Cup humiliation at the weekend.
Hungarian striker Tamas Priskin scored the only goal after 77 minutes at Portman Road to give the Tractor Boys an unexpected victory over the Barclays Premier League high-flyers.
The win followed a turbulent week for npower Championships side Ipswich, which saw manager Roy Keane leave his post with Paul Jewell appointed as his successor.
The exit of Keane and arrival of Jewell sandwiched a 7-0 hammering at the hands of Chelsea in the FA Cup, and Norris was happy to exorcise some ghosts of that display by beating Arsenal.
"I think pretty much everyone in the country wrote us off today so we've surprised a lot of people," he told Sky Sports 1.
"We let a a lot of people down against Chelsea. We didn't do ourselves justice so we went out tonight with that bit of extra determination and did what we had to.
"But there's still work to be done and we still have to go to the Emirates in the second leg."
Goalscorer Priskin was thrilled to have made his mark on the contest, adding: "I think the whole team did great work. It was a fantastic display from the whole team and I'm really happy we won 1-0 and I scored the goal."
Ipswich coach Ian McParland, who is expected to leave the club following the appointment of Jewell, is now hoping the result can spur the players on for the rest of the season.
"I'm delighted for the boys," he said. "It shows their character, to come back from the 7-0 defeat against Chelsea.
"They kept their shape tonight and worked hard, we might have had three goals and limited Arsenal to a couple of shots.
"I'm dead proud of them - now they have to carry on that hard work under the new manager and they'll be fine."
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was unable to mask his disappointment at the display, and is now pinning his hopes on the return leg at Emirates as his team chase their first piece of silverware in six seasons.
"We didn't create many chances," said the Frenchman. "Ipswich defended very well and we were caught out.
"We had no spark, Ipswich were sharper than us and we made a defensive mistake which they took advantage of.
"But we're at home in the second leg and that could make all the difference."
